  13. Discolour works only under System 7 on color-capable Macintoshes.
  14.  
  15. Discolour is a system extension for System 7.0 and later that rectifies
  16. a shortcoming in the wonderful Finder 7.0: floppy disk icons are
  17. displayed as the ugly old black and white icon while the rest of the
  18. desktop is bursting with color!
  19.  
  20. Discolour causes the Finder to display beautiful full-color icons in
  21. place of the black and white floppy disk icons when you are in 16 color
  22. mode or greater.  Just drag Discolour onto your System Folder icon and
  23. restart your Macintosh to activate it.

  25. Discolour uses less than 1K of memory once it is installed, and was
  26. optimized so that it won't slow your Macintosh down, so the cost
  27. of having beautiful color disk icons is minimal.

  36. Notes for Hackers

  39. If you don't like the icon I provided for Discolour, you CAN change it
  40. with ResEdit, but there are some precautions.  The resources you
  41. will need to change are 'icl4' #256 (the 16 color floppy disk icon)
  42. and 'icl8' #256 (the 256 and greater color floppy disk icon).  Here
  43. are some things to keep in mind:
  44.  
  45. 1) Work only on a COPY of Discolour in case you screw something up.
  46. 2) DO NOT modify the 'ICN#' #256 (b/w floppy disk icon) or the
  47.    floppy disk icon mask; this will cause Discolour to no longer work.
  48. 3) DO NOT distribute modified versions of Discolour.
  49. 4) Use only the Apple recommended colors in the 256 color icons so that
  50.    the icons will dim properly when they are clicked on.
  51. 5) Make sure the color disk icons you create fit exactly within the
  52.    icon mask or they will draw strangely.
  53. 6) Send me a copy of your work if you can!
